Next week is, amazingly, the end of our first quarter. I personally give thanks to you and to our staff for the work we have completed. With our eye on keeping Christ foremost in the lives of our children, it is a blessing we continue to offer a Catholic education on the plains of the Archdiocese.

Last week I mentioned the five essential marks of a Catholic school. The verbiage may not necessarily be clear, so I would like to offer a few comments on the first: “Inspired by a supernatural vision.” According to The Holy See’s Teaching on Catholic Schools by Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, this first mark encompasses our mission as he states:

The specific purpose of a Catholic education is the formation of boys and girls who will be good citizens of this world, loving God and neighbor and enriching society with the leaven of the Gospel, and who will also be citizens of the world to come, thus fulfilling their destiny to become saints. (p. 20)

As we know, many see education as an instrument for the acquisition of information that will improve the chances of worldly success and a more comfortable standard of living. Fortunately for us, we emphasize the education of the whole child with a focus on preparing our children for the world to come. Deo gratias!

With that, here is another reminder to pray the rosary with your family since October is the month in which Mary, Most Holy Queen of the Holy Rosary, is venerated.

Remember, too, Mrs. Sallie Wilson is preparing for the Halloween carnival and is asking for the following donations: cookie decorating supplies, desserts for the cake walk, pumpkin decorating paint and/or markers, small prizes, etc. Please contact Sallie at 571-1566.

The school received a check in the amount of $39.80 from Cartridges for Kids.  Please keep those used ink cartridges and used cell phones coming in.  Thank you for your support!

We count our blessings as we give thanks for the following:

·         Sterling Fire Department and Firefighters for the presentations during Fire Safety Week.

·         The Lady’s Auxiliary who helped purchase the supplies our students received.

·         All of the parents, family members and staff who helped line judge, keep score, and keep time for Junior High Volleyball games.

·         Coaches Jill Dreher and Shelley Parker for sharing their time and talents with the volleyball teams.

·         Anonymous donor for the popcorn oil.

·         Dusty Zink for being our line judge at our volleyball tournament.

Lastly, congratulations to all athletes who participated in fall sports, swimmers, football and volleyball players you all did a great job and we are proud of you. As we gear up for the winter athletic season, let’s keep in mind the words of John Paul the Great:

Playing sports has become very important today, since it can encourage young people to develop important values such as loyalty, perseverance, friendship, sharing, and solidarity. Sports, in fact, can make an effective contribution to peaceful understanding between peoples and to establishing the new civilization of love. Our athletics should go hand in hand with our youth ministry. Sports well understood and practiced contributes to the development of the whole person because it demands generous effort, careful self control, mastery of self and respect for others, complete commitment and team spirit.

May the light and peace of Christ be with you always as together we continue to be molders of dreams.
