Adult Faith Formation & Spirituality

“Adult faith formation, by which people consciously grow in the life of Christ through experience, reflection, prayer, and study, must be ‘the central task in catechetical enterprise’, becoming ‘the axis around which revolves the catechesis of childhood and adolescence as well as that of old age.’”

“Our Hearts Were Burning within Us – A Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation in the United States” ,National Conference of Catholic Bishops, 11/17/99

Adult religious formation is the lifelong process by which a person develops a mature faith relationship with God.  Learning in faith is not simply a matter “between God and me”.  Rather, it includes all occasions and opportunities that help an adult grow in faith – one’s relationship with God.  Liturgy, sacramental life, prayer, community and one’s involvement in service to others influence learning in faith.

As adults, we bring to the learning situation a wealth of experience.  We look to the faith stories of others, both now and in Scripture and Tradition, and, as we share our own religious stories, we grow in our relationship with God together.
