Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

by Jeff Cavins and Sarah Christmyer

Matthew: The King and His Kingdom is an exciting study that explores the life and mission of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel. Matthew demonstrates how the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament are fulfilled in Christ, who establishes a New Law and inaugurates the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. Participants will see Jesus as the awaited Messiah who relives the life and struggles of Israel to become the faithful and victorious King. Set in the rich context of Jesus' Jewish culture, this study will help participants understand who Jesus is and what his life and teachings mean for us today. Matthew is an ideal follow-up study to the basic narrative of Scripture taught in The Bible Timeline study.

We will meet on Tuesday evenings in Hagus Hall starting in mid-September.  Workbooks will be provided as part of our LIFELONG Faith Formation endeavor.

There are no pass/fail exams in this course.   However, there are assignments, for example, reading parts of the Bible. As is the case with our faith, the more we put into these courses, the better fruit will they bear.

When:  Tuesdays: 6:30 – 8:30 PM, beginning mid-September, in Hagus Hall

Please call the Parish Office to sign up for this course, so that we know the number of workbooks we need to order.

These sessions will focus on:

  • Why we do what we do – stand, kneel, genuflect, bless ourselves with holy water, strike our breast, exchange the Sign of Peace, and so on;
  • Why we pray the same prayers every time we celebrate;
  • Why we pray some different prayers every time we celebrate;
  • And any other questions that you may have!

We also will delve into this central mystery of our faith by embarking on a study of this holy Sacrament using Bishop Robert Barron’s study program, Eucharist: Sacred Meal, Sacrifice, Real Presence.  Bishop Barron clearly explains that the Eucharist is not a symbol, but is truly the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ.  This intimate gift from the Lord brings us into greater unity with the Trinity and offers us a foretaste of heaven.

When: Thursdays: September 21, 28, October 5, 12, 19 & 26

                   Mornings: 10:00 – 11:30 AM                   Evenings: 6:30 – 8:00 PM
